Directly from Serbia, we are happy to present the duo responsible for our next release, The Durians, with their debut album "Night
Market".

The Belgrade-based musical collective emerged from the depths of the infamous coronavirus winter in 2021. Their sonic vision is to craft a melange of pentatonic folk-inspired melodies sourced from across the globe, played on guitar or wind controller. These melodies are then immersed in a lush array of psychedelic pedal effects and synthesizers, seamlessly fused with bass guitar, percussion, and robust drum machine beats. The result is a multi-layered musical experience, akin to the intricate layers of flavor found in durian fruit and its products.

The pentatonic scale is often seen as embodying a profound connection between the spiritual and physical realms. This belief connects the pentatonic scale's five notes to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) and the five cardinal directions (east, south, center, west, and north) - symbolizing essential harmony between celestial and earthly dimensions. This concept transcends cultural boundaries and has been a fundamental element of traditional music and aesthetics across different regions and traditions.

However, this album is not spiritual or celestial in any direct sense. It is an earthly dancey guitaristic ode to the pentatonic scale, infused with the scents of tropical fruits and the smoke from food stalls, invasive like the tree of heaven or the shieldbugs. It's an almost gastronomic night market sonic journey, with plastic chairs, petrol fumes and neon sign reflections shimmering on the wet tarmac.
